Sanjeev Bikhchandani’s entrepreneurial journey did not begin with a fully developed business idea or a large investment. It began with a willingness to experiment, identify market opportunities and build something independently.

After completing his MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, he joined the corporate world and worked in consumer marketing. However, he eventually decided to leave his job and pursue entrepreneurship.

In the early 1990s, Bikhchandani began exploring business opportunities, including salary surveys, databases, feasibility studies and trademark-related research.

One of the early offerings was a salary survey that helped companies understand what they were paying MBA and engineering graduates. The idea emerged from observing how companies competed to recruit students at institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad.

This experience helped him recognise an important business principle: successful businesses often emerge from understanding customer needs and identifying problems that existing solutions have not adequately addressed.

In 1997, Info Edge launched Naukri.com, marking its transition into an internet-based business.

The platform brought job listings together in one place and made it easier for jobseekers and employers to connect. At a time when internet adoption in India was still developing, this was a significant opportunity.

The early years were challenging. Limited resources, financial constraints and an evolving internet ecosystem meant that building the business required persistence and careful cost management.

What started as a small entrepreneurial venture eventually grew into a major internet business.

Today, Info Edge operates several digital platforms, including Naukri.com, 99acres.com, Jeevansathi.com and Shiksha.com.

5 important career lessons from Sanjeev Bikhchandani for freshers

His journey offers several practical lessons for students and young professionals who are beginning their careers.

1. Look for meaning, not just money

One of Sanjeev Bikhchandani’s most memorable career messages is to look for meaning rather than making money the sole objective of life. For freshers, this does not mean ignoring salary or financial stability. Instead, it means evaluating a career opportunity beyond its compensation package. A job that offers opportunities to learn, develop new skills, and work toward something meaningful can significantly support long-term professional growth.

When choosing your first job, consider:

- Does the role align with your interests and strengths?

- Will you have opportunities to learn and develop?

- Does the organisation offer exposure to meaningful projects?

- Can this experience help you build a stronger career in the future?

Money matters, but it should not be the only factor driving your career decisions.

2. Take calculated risks and be willing to change

Leaving a secure corporate job to pursue entrepreneurship was a significant decision. His journey demonstrates that professional growth sometimes requires stepping outside your comfort zone. For fresh graduates, taking risks does not necessarily mean starting a business immediately or leaving a job without a plan.

It can mean applying for an unfamiliar role, learning a new skill, exploring a different industry or taking responsibility for a challenging project.

The important thing is to assess the risks, prepare yourself and recognise when a change could help you grow.

3. Do not expect success overnight

The early years of building Info Edge involved several experiments before the business found a scalable opportunity through Naukri.com.

This is an important lesson for freshers entering the professional world.

Your first job may not be your dream job. Your initial projects may not deliver the results you expect, and your career path may not always be straightforward.

Instead of becoming discouraged by setbacks, focus on building experience, understanding your strengths and improving your performance.

Professional success is often the outcome of consistent effort and learning over time.

4. Focus on solving real problems

One of the important insights from Bikhchandani’s entrepreneurial journey is the value of understanding customer needs.

The idea behind Naukri.com emerged from recognising an opportunity in the recruitment market and creating a platform that could make job discovery easier.

This principle is equally relevant to freshers across industries.

Whether you work in marketing, technology, finance, sales or operations, employers value people who can understand problems and find practical solutions.

To develop this ability:

- Ask questions before jumping to conclusions.

- Understand the needs of customers and stakeholders.

- Look for ways to improve existing processes.

- Take ownership instead of waiting for instructions.

- Learn to connect your work with measurable outcomes.

Being able to solve problems will help you become a more valuable professional.

5. Work with the right people and keep improving

Career growth is influenced not only by your individual skills but also by the people you work with.

Bikhchandani’s entrepreneurial journey highlights the importance of building trust with employees, co-founders, investors and customers.

For young professionals, this translates into developing strong working relationships, being honest in your interactions and treating colleagues with respect.

Surround yourself with people who encourage learning, share knowledge and challenge you to improve.

A good professional reputation, combined with the willingness to learn, can open doors to opportunities throughout your career.

Sanjeev Bikhchandani’s philosophy on success and professional growth

Beyond building a successful business, Bikhchandani’s journey highlights the connection between action, achievement and self-confidence.

Taking action allows you to gain experience. Achieving smaller goals builds confidence, which encourages you to take on bigger challenges.

This creates a positive cycle of continuous improvement.

For freshers, the takeaway is simple: do not wait until you feel completely prepared to take the next step. Start learning, take responsibility and improve with every experience.

You do not need to have your entire career figured out when you graduate. What matters is developing the confidence and capability to navigate new opportunities.
