Introduction

Every Developer on getting an AWS bill felt an obvious need for having an AWS native tool that could provide them with a closer look at their spending over time. So AWS came up with AWS Cost Explorer. It helps the user understand their costs and forecast their future costs. It does not reduce their costs.

If the problem is still not solved by the AWS Cost Explorer. To retain users, AWS comes up with AWS Reserved Instances. These are discounted on the bill concept. Users get a significant discount compared to On-Demand Cloud Computing Prices. We will see what these AWS Reserved Instance Reports are in the coming section and how any user could view and use them.

AWS Reserved Instance Coverage report helps us understand and monitor AWS EC2 instances covered by Reserved Instance. To optimize costs, users can use these reports to identify the under-utilized instances and those running at on-demand rates to adjust their RI purchases. If users have  Instances that are in frequent use and aren't covered by RIs, they may be able to save some bucks by purchasing RIs for them.

To retrieve Reserved Instance Coverage information from Amazon, the user must enable Amazon's Cost Explorer.

Some Basic Terms to understand these reports are mentioned below hope this helps.

  • Average Coverage (%): The percentage of instance hours used covered by RIs.
  • Total On-Demand Hours: The number of instance hours for our selected duration using on-demand payments (not covered by RIs).
  • Total Reserved Hours: Number of hours for our selected duration covered by Reserved Instances
  • Total Running Hours: Total number of instance hours for our selected duration.
  • Total On-Demand Costs: It represents how much users spend on their on-demand instances.

How to view AWS Reserved Instance utilization and Coverage

So in the above section, you understand all about the AWS Reserved Instance Coverage report and how it helps developers save lots of bucks. But now we are going to see how we can view these AWS Reserved Instance utilization reporting

If you want to view your RI utilization and RI coverage reports, follow the mentioned steps:

  1. Open the AWS Cost Management Console.
  2. Select Cost Explorer from the navigation pane.

  3. Select Reports.
  4. For viewing the RI utilization report, select RI Utilization.
  5. For viewing the RI coverage report, select RI Coverage.
  6. Now Open the Services filter.
  7. You can get the utilization data of any service which you select here.
  8. Select Apply Filters.

How to use AWS Reserved Instance utilization report in Cost Explorer

Users can use the AWS Cost Explorer for generating the Reserved Instance Utilization and Reserved Instance coverage reports. With these reports, we can dive much deeper into our Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Redshift, Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), Amazon OpenSearch Service, and Amazon ElastiCache RIs.If you want to use these AWS Cost Explorer report to understand Reserved Instances, you  follow the mentioned steps:           

  • Users can view a combined usage of all their purchased Reserved Instances in the chart by selecting all the RIs in the table.

  • We can Individually view the utilization of each Reserved Instance in the chart by selecting the particular RI from the table.

  • We can view the utilization of Reserved Instance as a percentage of purchased RI hours in the chart.
     
  • We can view the number of Reserved Instances hours used against the RI hours purchased in the table.
     
  • Users can also define a utilization threshold, known as utilization target, and identify Reserved Instances that meet their utilization target.

    To define the utilization target, users should enter their preferred value for the utilization target and select to show the target line on the chart. The target line would be visible as a dotted line in the chart and an RI utilization status bar in the table.
  • RIs with a red status bar indicate they have not used reservation hours.
  • RIs with a yellow status bar indicates they are under your utilization target.
  • RIs with a green status bar indicates RI has met our utilization target.
  • Reserved Instances with a grey bar aren't using reservations.
