Introduction

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) are two prevalent display technologies used in modern electronic devices like televisions, monitors, and smartphones. While both use liquid crystals to create images, the primary difference between the two lies in their backlighting technology.

Difference Between LCD and LED

This article provides an in-depth comparison of LCD and LED displays, including their working principles, brightness and contrast, energy efficiency, size and weight, advantages and disadvantages, frequently asked questions, and a conclusion to help you choose the right technology for your needs.

What is the LCD?

LCD stands for Liquid crystal display. It is a kind of flat-panel display technology that produces images by manipulating the flow of light through liquid crystals.LCD displays consist of liquid crystals sandwiched between two layers of glass. The liquid crystals can be manipulated to block or allow light to pass through by applying an electric current. LCD displays use a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) as a backlight, which illuminates the liquid crystals to produce an image. The images produce by LCD are not very clear when we compare it with LED.

Advantages of LCD

  • Lower initial cost: LCD displays are generally more affordable compared to LED displays. This is budget-friendly.

  • Wide availability: LCD displays come in a variety of sizes and configurations and are widely available.

  • Energy efficiency: LCD displays consume less power compared to their CRT predecessors. These are more efficient and also contribute to environmental sustainability.

  • Color accuracy: LCD displays offer excellent color accuracy and vibrant image reproduction, making them suitable for tasks that require precise color representation.

Disadvantages of LCD

  • Lower brightness and contrast: LCD displays generally have lower brightness and contrast ratios.

  • Less energy-efficient: LCD displays consume more power and generate more heat, which can lead to higher electricity costs and potential overheating.

  • Limited viewing angles: LCD displays, particularly those with TN panels, may suffer from limited viewing angles, leading to color and contrast shifts.

What is the LED?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode (LED). When an electric current flows through a semiconductor device, called an LED, the device emits light. Within the semiconductor, when the particles that carry the current(holes and electrons) combine together, light is produced. These are essentially a type of LCD but with a different backlighting system. Instead of CCFLs, LED displays use Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for backlighting. LEDs are more energy-efficient and can be placed in different configurations, such as edge-lit or full-array, offering more flexibility in brightness, contrast, and uniformity.

Advantages of LED

  • Better brightness and contrast: LED displays offer improved brightness and contrast.

  • Energy efficiency: LED displays consumes less power, generate less heat, and last longer

  • Slimmer design: LED displays are thinner and lighter, making them ideal for modern, sleek electronic devices.

  • Wider viewing angles: LED displays with IPS or VA panels provide wider viewing angles, ensuring consistent color reproduction and contrast across various viewing positions.

Disadvantages of LED

  • Higher initial cost: LED displays are typically more expensive than LCD displays due to the advanced technology.

  • Potential uneven backlighting: In some edge-lit LED displays, uneven backlighting may occur, causing bright spots or dim areas on the screen.

  • Limited viewing angles: LED displays may have narrower viewing angles compared to LCD displays.

Difference Between LCD and LED

Parameter LCD LED
Technology LCD uses liquid crystals and CCFL as a backlight to produce images.  LED uses different backlighting systems. It uses an emitting diode, and around or behind the LCD display, LEDs are utilized as a light source.
Power Consumption LCD displays with CCFL backlighting are less energy-efficient compared to LED displays. LED displays are more energy-efficient due to their lower power consumption,
Price LCDs are less costly than LEDs.  LEDs are expensive but provide better quality.
Brightness and Contrast LCD displays generally offer lower brightness and contrast compared to LED displays. LED displays provide better brightness and contrast due to the flexibility of LED backlighting.
Viewing Angles LCD displays, particularly those with Twisted Nematic (TN) panels, may suffer from limited viewing angles. LED displays, especially those with In-Plane Switching (IPS) or Vertical Alignment (VA) panels, generally offer wider viewing angles compared to LCD displays.
Thickness LCD displays using CCFL backlighting tend to be thicker and heavier compared to LED displays.  LED displays are generally thinner and lighter than LCDs because LEDs require less space and can be arranged more efficiently.
Lifespan The backlight requires frequent replacement, which reduces its lifespan.  LED has a longer lifespan than LCD.
Effect on the Environment LCDs are less eco-friendly as they contain mercury which is difficult to dispose of.  LEDs are more environmentally friendly as they use low power to produce images.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which one is better LED or LCD?

To choose which one is better depends on the various factors and differs from person to person. To get a budget-friendly display, LCD is better than LED. When we compare the brightness and contrast, LEDs are better. However, your choice between the two may depend on factors such as budget, size requirements, and personal preferences.

What is the difference between LCD LED and OLED?

LCD(Liquid Crystal Display), LED(Light Emitting Diode), and OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diode), all are display technologies but they differ in terms of their principle and their way of emitting light.

Which lasts longer LCD or LED?

LED displays are typically more expensive than LCD displays due to the advanced technology and higher production costs.

What are the advantages of LCD over LED?

LCDs are budget-friendly when compared to LED. LEDs are expensive but provide better quality. While LCD displays tend to be more affordable and widely available, they usually have lower brightness, contrast, and energy efficiency compared to LED displays.

Conclusion

LCD and LED displays are two popular display technologies with distinct characteristics. In this blog, we thoroughly discussed LCD and LED. We further in the blog, learned about their advantages and disadvantages. Later in the end, we looked at the difference table between LCD and LED.
