A multimedia application in entertainment might integrate audio, video, and animation to create a realistic and interactive experience, whereas a multimedia application in education might combine text, graphics, and video to teach a hard topic in a simpler way.

  • Reproducibility: Multimedia content may be easily copied, distributed, and accessed on various networks, platforms, and gadgets. Therefore, once created, the content can be distributed and used again for other purposes.
     
  • Flexibility: Multimedia content can be altered to suit specific requirements. As a result, content may be created that can be altered to fit many languages and cultural backgrounds.

    For example, many times, we compress the size of images so that they can be stored in lesser space.

    There are two types of compression. Lossless compression and lossy compression. Lossless compression involves  compressing without loss of data while lossy compression involves compressing with some data loss. 
     
  4. Very High Processing Power: Multimedia requires high processing power to handle complex digital media files. A high-speed processor is necessary to run multimedia applications smoothly. 
     
  5. File System: A robust file system is essential for managing multimedia files. Multimedia files can be large, and it is crucial to organize them systematically.
     
  6. Synchronization: In a multimedia system, different elements such as audio and video can be synchronized to create a seamless and engaging experience for the user. This can be seen when we add audio to a video. The editors do it in such a way that both are synchronized and look natural.
     
  7. Input or Output: Multimedia applications need input devices like a keyboard, mouse, and microphone to interact with users. Output devices like speakers, headphones, and displays are essential to experience and interact with multimedia content.
     
  8. Editing: Multimedia systems often allow for easy editing and customization of the content, allowing users to create their versions of the multimedia elements. For example, we often cut short a long video to get the part that is useful to us. Editing images is also an example of this.
     
  9. Security: Multimedia systems can be designed with security features such as encryption to protect the content from unauthorized access or use. For example, some images or videos are password protected.
     
  10. Operating System: The operating system is critical in managing multimedia applications. The OS must be capable of handling multimedia tasks like managing hardware resources, running multimedia applications and providing user-friendly interface for smooth playback.
     
  11. Network Support: Multimedia applications can be used for online streaming, file sharing, and video conferencing. Therefore, they need network support, high-speed internet connectivity, and reliable servers. Internet is also needed for sharing the multimedia across various platforms.
