Introduction to iOS 14

iOS is a mobile operating system developed by Apple Incorporation exclusively for its hardware. The operating system was created in a way to provide seamless compatibility with Apple products and enhance the user experience through the development of the features deemed essential for Apple products. This operating system powers most mobile devices and is the second-most widely installed mobile operating system other than Android.

In June 2020, iOS 14 was introduced as the latest version of iOS. It is designed to incorporate additional features to adapt with various user demands in relation to the user experience. Additionally, iOS 14 version also takes into account the importance of data security and privacy, and has therefore included special features to aid in this respect.

What are the salient features of iOS 14?

In this section, we will discuss the prominent features introduced in iOS 14.

Home Screen

In iOS 14, the home screen is redesigned to provide more customization access to its users. Bunch of application pages can be hidden by the users and a new application library is introduced that contains all the applications, which can be viewed at once. Multiple widgets can be placed on the home screen, which can be customized accordingly.

App Library

Application library is an important aspect of the navigation between applications and therefore, it can now be accessed by swiping till the end of the home screen pages. App suggestions are made on the basis of the user’s activity and they can be categorized into sorted orders of similar use such as Entertainment, Messaging, etc. All the applications downloaded from the App Store are put together in the App Library.

Widgets

Widgets have been redesigned to incorporate new designs and more information. Alteration in the appearance of the widgets is easier and all default apps have their respective widgets to be put on the home screen. A stack of 10 widgets can be made on the home screen for better accessibility and even the developers can make their own widgets.

Safari

In iOS 14, Safari is capable of translating complete webpages. A translation icon has been introduced to facilitate this feature and translation can be done into a set of many languages. Safari also provides an option to access a privacy report which shows cross-site trackers blocked by Safari itself. Safari also provides better performance now and keeps track of information so that there are no possibilities of data breach.

Compact User Interface

In iOS 14, the user interface is more compact and supports multi-tasking. For example, when a user receives a phone call then instead of occupying the entire screen, a banner is displayed so that the user can keep track of other applications also. Moreover, a picture-in-picture feature has been launched to support  multi-tasking. This window can be adjusted accordingly to give users a seamless experience.

Siri

Siri’s design has also been modified to provide a compact look. On requesting any service, the information is displayed on the top whereas, Siri comes at the bottom of the screen. Siri’s information collection has also increased 20 times and it can provide answers to a broader range of questions. Furthermore, there is an update in the number of  languages that can be translated.

Features introduced to improve security and data protection in iOS 14

Some features are added to iOS 14 to prevent data breach and provide better security to the data and sensitive information of the user. They are as follows:

  1. Description of how apps use data - In this option, we can disclose information about what kind of data our app can collect and whether it is used to track users or not. The provided information is shown on the app’s App Store page.
  2. Permission to track - In this version, the access to user identifier for advertisers (IDFA) is an option. Users are asked for explicit consent via the App Tracking Transparency framework.
  3. Changes to Photo Library - In iOS 14, there are two ways to access the user’s photo library, using PHPicker and a limited photo picker.
  4. Approximate Location - Users have the option to limit the location access of an application to an approximate location. Although some apps require precise location, other apps do not need it and therefore, this feature can be turned on. The radius of approximation is a few miles from the actual location.
