Importance of On Page SEO

As discussed in the previous section, the goal of on page SEO techniques is to help search engines understand the content on a webpage. On page SEO techniques like adding relevant keywords assists with that.  Adding keywords in on page SEO also helps increase a webpage's rank.

Apart from that, on page SEO deals with the content on a webpage. Thus, it helps a website be optimized for both search engines and humans.

Some other advantages of on page SEO techniques have been summarised in the image below.

Importance of On Page SEO

On Page SEO Elements

From the beginning of the article, we have mentioned that certain components on a web page are optimized in on page SEO. We already got a rough idea of the elements. Let’s see what they are in detail now.

On page SEO elements can be divided into three categories:

(i) Content elements

(ii) HTML elements

(iii) Site architecture elements

These have certain elements under them. Let’s see what they are.

Content Elements

These deal with the different elements that are a part of the content of a webpage.

High-Quality Page Content

In SEO, a page's contents should be presented so that it is understandable to the reader and search engines. For this, selecting a topic is an important part. Also, choosing a relevant keyword is integral to on-page SEO techniques. We can choose keywords by searching Google for terms related to the topic or by using tools like Ahrefs, AnswerthePublic, and UberSuggest. Some other methods to make high-quality page content are:

  • Adding engaging visual content.
  • Presenting according to the audience's needs. This has been summarized in the table below:

Audience

Type of Content

Awareness

Blog posts and videos

Consideration

Guides and case studies

Decision

Comparisons and product demos

  • Solve the audience’s problem.
  • Develop content in such a way that people are tempted to share it with others.

HTML Elements

This includes elements in the frontend of a webpage.

Title Tags

Usually, the title of a book tells us what a book is about. Similarly, title tags tell a visitor and the search engines about a webpage. They are a vital part of page ranking, so we should know how to write a proper one. Some guidelines for writing a title tag are:

  • Include the keyword but don’t stuff the title with keywords
  • Keep it under 60 characters
  • Make the title relevant to the page
  • Do not use all caps
  • Include the brand name

Headers

If you know HTML, you already know what the different headers are. They are the <h1>, <h2> and <h3> tags used for headings. For a good page ranking, proper headings must be kept in the proper headers. For example, headings containing the keyword should be kept in a <h1> or <h2> tag.

Meta Descriptions

Have you noticed that when you search for something on Google, a small page description comes beneath the link?

Example of Meta Description Given By Searching Coding Ninjas on Google

This meta description is an essential factor in page ranking too. Depending on the description, a viewer will open the website. If the description is good, then more viewers will open the link, thereby improving the page rank.

Thus, a meta description should be written properly for which some guidelines are:

  • It should be less than 160 characters.
  • Keep the entire keyword in it.
  • Use one or two convincing sentences.
  • Don’t use alphanumeric characters.

Alt-Text for Images

We can see the images on a webpage, but a search engine cannot. Instead of images, it sees the alt-text for images. Thus, that is also considered a part of the written content by a search engine and must be relevant to the topic.

Some tips for writing alt-text for images are

  • It should be descriptive and specific.
  • It should be relevant to the topic.
  • Add the keyword if possible, but don’t overdo it.

Structured Markup

This includes how the content on a page is arranged. It is a part of technical SEO that overlaps with on page SEO techniques.

Site Architecture Elements

These elements define how the different elements in a webpage are structured. It is used so that a search engine can easily crawl the contents of a webpage.

Page URLs

The URL of a webpage should be kept short and easy to understand for both the readers and the search engine.

For example, the link to this article is

https://www.codingninjas.com/studio/library/on-page-seo-techniques

From here, we can understand that we are on the Coding Ninjas website, where under Coding Ninjas Studio, there is a menu called library containing the article titled On Page SEO Techniques.

Some practices for writing SEO-friendly URLs are:

  • Don’t keep extra and unnecessary words.
  • Use only 1-2 keywords .
  • Use HTTPS since Google gives it a positive ranking factor.

Internal Linking

It means adding the links to other pages on the same website within the content.

How it works as one of the page SEO techniques is quite interesting. Suppose another article from Coding Ninjas is linked in this article, and you visit it. The same has been done for that article, too, because of which you visit a couple of Coding Ninjas blogs. From this activity, a search engine assumes that the articles on Coding Ninjas are helpful, thereby giving a higher rank to their articles.

Mobile Responsiveness

Nowadays, most people view web pages on mobile phones. So the content, such as pictures, the layout of the webpage, etc., must be made so that they open properly on a website. This is considered an on page SEO technique by Google.

Site Speed

How fast a web page loads when opened on a desktop or mobile is also considered a factor in page ranking by search engines.

With this, we come to the end of our article about on page SEO techniques.
