Introduction

The terms "order" and "ranking" refer to a person's relative position or standing. The process of identifying a person's or thing's position or place based on comparisons or positions of other people or things is known as ranking. The relative position or ranking of distinct groups of people or items is presented in order and logical reasoning ranking, and one must establish the rank or position of the person from left to right or from top to bottom of a row or class or the total number of individuals.

What are order and Ranking Reasoning?

Order and Ranking is a broad term that refers to the challenges of arranging people or items in ascending or decreasing order depending on many factors such as height, weight, merit, position, etc. Determining a person's or object's position in a line or queue, as well as issues with the time sequence test, in which applicants must determine a certain day based on provided conditions.

The order and ranking reasoning portion includes problems such as sequential order or arrangement, position test, time sequence test, and so on.

Types

We now know what the questions in the Order and Ranking input output reasoning part entail. Let's take a look at the many types of inquiries that might ask one by one.

Ranking Based

Candidates must determine a person's position or rank in this form of order and ranking rationale. Ranking-based questions can be broken down into several categories, some of which are shown below.

  1. Rank from Left to Right: Candidates must find a person's place or rank from the left or right end, depending on the given question, in this form of order and ranking reasoning.
  2. Total Person in a row: Candidates must find the total number of people in a row or a class in this form of order and ranking reasoning.
  3. The person between two people: Overlapping-based reasoning is another name for this form of order and ranking reasoning. Candidates must find the number of people between two people when their rank satisfies the requirement of overlapping in this form of order and ranking reasoning.
  4. Persons between two people: Non-overlapping-based reasoning is another name for this form of order and ranking reasoning. Candidates must find the number of people between two people when their rank does not satisfy the overlapping criterion in this form of order and ranking reasoning.
  5. Interchanging the Positions: Candidates must determine the position of a person or the total number of people in a row when two people shift positions in this form of order and ranking reasoning.
  6. Ratio-Based Problems: Candidates must discover the place or rank of a girl or a guy when the ratio of the two is presented in this form of order and ranking rationale.

Comparison Based

Candidates must compare different quantities to discover the correct order in this type of order and ranking reasoning.

Tips and Tricks

  • Candidates can use the formula to compute the total number of people in a row or column: Rank from left + Rank from right - 1 = Total Person.
  • The number of people between two people = total number of people - sum of positions of two different people from opposite sides for non-overlapping type inquiries.
  • Number of people between two people in overlapping type questions = sum of locations of two separate people from opposing ends - total number of people - 2
  • The sum of the positions of the two people from opposing ends > the total number of people is a condition for overlapping.

Examples

  1. In a row of persons, the position of Saket from the left side of the row is 27th, and the position of Saket from the right side of the row is 34th. Find the total number of students in the row? ( IBPS PO 2019)

            a) 60

            b) 61

            c) 62

            d) 59

Answer: a) 60 Solution: Total number of students = (Position of Saket from left + Position of Saket from right) -1 Total number of students = (27 + 34) – 1 = 61 – 1 = 60.

Hence the correct answer is option A.

2. In a row of persons, the position of Aparna Nair from the left side of the row is 27th, and there are 5 persons after her in the row. Find the total no. of persons in the row?

Solution: No. of persons in the row = Position of Aparna from left + No. of persons after Aparna.

⇒ Total no. of persons = 27 + 5 = 32

3. The number of objects between two different persons = Total number of books – (Sum of positions of two different persons from opposite sides). There are 24 students in the dance class, and the teacher is planning for an arrangement of students on stage. Samantha is 9th from the left side of the row, and Supreetha is 22nd from the right side of the row. Find the number of dancers standing between the sisters Sampratha and Supreetha? ( Asked in bank exams)

    a) 4

    b) 5

    c) 6

    d) 7

Answer:b) 5

Solution:Adding the position of Sampratha and Supreetha we get:

= 9 + 22 = 31

The result '31' is greater than the total number of students in a dance class. Therefore the number of dancers standing between the sisters will be = [(Position of Sampratha from left + Position of Supreetha from right) – Total number of dancers – 2]

The number of dancers between Sampratha and Supreetha

= (9+22) – 24 – 2 = 31 – 24 – 2 = 5.

Hence the correct answer is option B.

4. Deepavali or Diwali is a festival light in India. One can find the row of lamps in every house these days. Chaitra lights a row of the lamp in her home. The Square-shaped lamp is at 18th from the left, and a circular-shaped lamp is at 25th position in a row from the right. Find the total number of lamps Chaitra had lit? ( Infosys 2019)

    a) 27

    b) 30

    c) 43

    d) Can't be determined

Answer: d) Can't be determined

Solution: The scenario can be either be of Overlapping or non-overlapping one. Hence the correct answer is option D.
