What is Biometrics?

Biometrics is the identification of an individual using physical characteristics.

The examples of Biometrics are:

Types of Biometrics

Biometrics can be broadly classified into two types:

  • Physical Biometrics
  • Behavioural Biometrics

Physical Biometrics

Physical Biometrics identifies an individual based on physical characteristics like fingerprints, facial scans, DNA etc.

Physical Biometrics are further classified into:

  • Facial recognition
  • Fingerprint recognition
  • DNA matching
  • Retina scan
  • Ear authentication

Facial recognition

Facial recognition is used to identify an individual by scanning the face of the person. Most smartphones have this feature. 

Fingerprint recognition

Fingerprint recognition is one of the oldest recognition methods. Each individual has a unique fingerprint; therefore, this method is highly used. Fingerprint recognition is used in smartphones and computers to unlock the device. 

DNA matching

DNA contains genetic information. Thus DNA matching is used to identify whether a man is the biological father of another person. DNA matching is also used to trace criminals. 

Retina scan

In this scan, the blind spot of the eye and the blood vessels on the surface of the retina is observed. 

Ear authentication

We use the external ear of an individual to distinguish him in this authentication. The human ear shape is unique, and thus this scan is quite accurate.

Behavioural Biometrics

In this identification method, we see the characteristics of the person’s behaviour.

Behavioural Biometrics is further divided into:

  • Voice recognition
  • Keystroke method
  • Signature recognition

Voice recognition

Voice recognition is used in intelligent buildings. Voice recognition identifies an individual based on voice frequency and other voice characteristics.

Keystroke method

The keystroke dynamics identifies an individual based on the keystrokes they make on the keyboard.

Signature recognition

Signature recognition has been used since long ago for identification. We use signatures in banks, property papers etc., for authentication.
