    Why this role matters

    The Principal S&IT as technology expert for OR OSS will be responsible for defining technology standards, ensuring being followed, making sure best technology is being used for solutions, providing best scalable solution using correct architecture design patterns.

    The role is to fully, and personally, be accountable for performance of key engineering systems that underpin MFU s ability to sell and service its customers, in particular, building and managing the teams that will do the design, development, deployment and support of these applications, through the entire lifecycle. The expectation for the role is to manage the specific details and complexities, but also to highlight risks / issues to the appropriate senior management and to fulfil the BT TSO objectives in terms of right locations and right people, by designing and executing appropriate strategies at the engineering platform level

    Key Responsibilities

    The lead will report to the Head of Software Engineering and execute an active role in the Leadership team in this unit.

    The accountable representative of IT to all senior/exec level OR stakeholders.

    The role directly responsible for defining s/w solutioning, in-life stability from functional and non-functional perspective.

    The day to day role encompasses all aspects of engineering these systems from architecture, design, development, testing internally, as well as supporting E2E test / ORT (technology), before being deployed into Live. In addition, the teams also engage with the operations users to address any issues that are encountered in Live from non-functional/technology perspective.

    The role holder is expected to make authoritative recommendations that balance deliverable commitments, unit strategic decisions on software engineering, and operational performance.

    Prepare proposals and software deliveries based on a strong commercial and business awareness of one or more business unit, stakeholder and/or customer area.

    Keep senior stakeholders updated on the progress and issues affecting major and minor releases from technology/non-functional perspective.

    Delivering positive customer experience and service delivered through the software developed.

    Managing stakeholder requirements and communications for major escalations.

    Creating a culture of continuous development that nurtures a world class software development practice

    Being a strong contributor within the Software Engineering profession.

    As part of the Engineering Team, the role holder will be part of the wider Engineering team to bring about good initiatives on infrastructure Engineering (performance monitoring, IP360 etc.), IT simplification to reduce the number of applications, dealing with End of Service Life components, resilience and availability, security related aspects (SACS, IP360, PCI) and keeping the asset inventory up to date on central systems such as SALSA and Supportal.

    Thought leadership on technical delivery and the E2E pipeline, to ensure delivery is continuously improved by all teams in IT and OR. To continue to deliver increased value and output, while constantly reducing the costs required to run these platform teams by increased efficiency, and optimised teams that perform better as time goes on


    Key Business Deliveries: Deliver the Roadmap within budget. Ensure deliveries are RFT, so capabilities and products are launched to milestones and quality. Improve InLife. What goes into design, goes to production.

    Delivery of major and maintenance releases on time and to budget, to the heartbeat of deliveries that each part of OR demands (not all parts will use the same common delivery cycle)

    A Quarter on quarter % reduction in post deployment faults.

    Work with platforms to improve delivery throughput Release on Release.

    Service Obsessed: NFR & operational management built in from requirements to drive RFT, prevent incidents and recover invisibly. Improve platform stability (usable / performant) and industrialise IT Governance (IP360, EoSL, Resilience). Improve agent Your Say.

    Insight into the telecommunications domain (understanding of business, markets, products & interworking of a complex telecommunications organization) with a blend of expert level ICT knowledge to help provide strategy and direction to TSO and OR.

    Good understanding of Telecom OSS domain.

    Should have experience around working on multi-tier complex application and able to give simple and scalable solution for complex problem.

    Good understanding of latest technologies and s/w engineering practices. e.g. No-SQL, J2EE frameworks, design patterns, etc.

    Demonstrates excellent communication skills with ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the organisation reaching out when needed to resolve issues up to and including Board level.

    Ability to set technical strategic direction and lead a virtual team, shaping their output towards the strategy. Recognised authority in their area.

    Exposure to varied development methodologies Waterfall, Agile etc.

    Shows strength in negotiation both internally and externally to ensure successful resolution of issues prior to escalation, ensuring that the wider business imperative is not undermined.

    Effective leadership skills with strong motivational and technology skills that will influence and drive the team to success. Ability to lead significant technology change programmes.

    Ability to independently drive change within the team that will improve the overall efficiency and throughput.

    A clear understanding of the business imperatives and how they align with the wider company strategy.

    An extensive knowledge of the Business OSS / BSS stack.

    The ability to build a strong and effective network of relationships that can be exploited to ensure that issues get resolved quicker.

    Commitment to the role with regular out of hours working.

    Focus on driving solutions rather than highlighting problems, working collaboratively across teams.

    Coach, develop and mentor direct reports and matrix team, sharing best practice, to ensure team operates effectively to achieve business benefits.

    To manage team finances and resources to deliver business benefit within agreed budget limits.

    The complexity of the job is on multiple dimensions:

    To increase reuse and make the applications data driven, to ensure new products can be launched to market with very little development and mainly through configuration and data changes this will reduce the cost, and the time taken to launch new products, providing BT a competitive cost advantage

    To reduce the sheer number of applications (and consequent costs to the business) by migrating products to strategic applications, or by migrating customers to newer / better products, supported by newer / strategic applications

    To sustain some of the old / legacy applications, built on really old technologies, which are long out of support, and have no real development happening. However, these applications still need to be sustained, and supported, as they service high-margin products from a business perspective.

    To continue to deliver increased value and output, while constantly reducing the costs required to run these platform teams by increased efficiency, and optimised teams that perform better as time goes on.

    To promote strong people management skills that recognise differentiated performance and potential, while also providing an environment for career coaching that ensures appropriate planning for future career development.

    To promote a healthy, sustainable and collaborative working environment across the teams, both FTEs and subcontractors, across the different geographies, both within the teams, as well as with other teams.

    Experience required.

    Hands-on coding ability and to trouble shoot and fix Java/J2EE, Oracle, Weblogic

    Working knowledge of test driven development, ability to use refactoring techniques, performance tuning of application and automated test script development

    Strong understanding of Telecom OSS domain.

    Past experience on rollout of complex systems as part of big ticket transformation.

    Sound understanding of STORM process

    Effective verbal and written communication skills

    Strong analytical and debugging kills

    Expertise in usage of design patterns.
