- Support the drafting of simple geometrical shapes and component features in CAD tools for structural layouts and basic assemblies.
- Participate in validation activities by observing and collecting data from structural tests and fitment trials.
- Prepare initial sketches and contribute to mark-ups for design reviews.
Materials Engineering:
- Assist in identifying suitable materials (metals, polymers, composites) for basic defense applications based on property requirements.
- Participate in material characterization activities such as chemicals, mechanical and metallographic testings, Destructove and Non-destructive hardness, tensile, and corrosion testing of standard samples.
- Support the material traceability process by labeling specimens, maintaining logs, and handling test documentation.
- Help in preliminary evaluation of test results under the direction of senior engineers.
Technical Skills:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of common mechanical systems and components used in defense platforms, including mounts, brackets, housings, and interfaces, Airframes etc.
- Support activities involving RF defence systems enclosures (e.g., radomes, antenna mounts, waveguide flanges) in coordination with electrical teams.
- Follow safety and compliance requirements (e.g., use of PPE, ESD precautions) during prototyping and field work.
- Participate in hands-on prototyping, including basic fabrication, assembly, and fitting activities.
- Assist in documenting mechanical designs, assembly steps, and material selections as per work instructions or guidelines.
- Become familiar with relevant defense standards such as ASTM, AMS,IS, ISO, MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461 through practical exposure.
Mechanical Drawing / Design Understanding:
- Read and interpret basic mechanical drawings, including part views, tolerances, and symbols, GD&T.
- Assist in identifying mechanical components and assembly interfaces from 2D and 3D CAD models.
- Flag discrepancies between design and actual parts during assembly and communicate observations clearly.
- Use drawing annotations and reference numbers to trace BOM elements.
Assembly or Integration of Systems and Maintenance:
- Follow work instructions to perform basic mechanical assembly operations, including fastening, aligning, and adjusting parts using hand tools.
- Assist in integrating mechanical components such as Airframes, Mounting brackets, dampers, covers, and heat sinks into system-level assemblies.
- Identify and handle standard mechanical tools such as spanners, Screw drivers, Needle files, Fixtures torque wrenches, drill bits & tap sets, and rivets with proper safety precautions.
- Participate in routine maintenance tasks by cleaning, lubricating, tightening, or replacing parts as instructed.
- Support system upgrades by disassembling legacy components and installing updated mechanical kits.
- Perform basic operations like drilling, tapping, riveting, and sealing as per instruction and guidance.
- Apply correct torque values using calibrated torque tools and document results where applicable.
- Assist in performing mechanical quality checks such as CG, Orthogonal & Cant angles, alignment, fit, and finish using feeler gauges and checklists.
Testing and Inspection Support:
- Prepare test setups for environmental or mechanical tests (e.g., vibration fixtures, thermal chambers) as guided by test engineers.
- Support inspection teams in dimensional verification using basic instruments (vernier calipers, height gauges, micrometers, Radious gauges, Comparators etc.).
- Record observations during inspection and testing activities and escalate non-conformities to supervisors.
Manufacturing and Shop Floor Coordination:
- Assist in coordinating with fabrication vendors and internal machine shops for the availability and quality of machined parts.
- Support incoming inspection of fabricated components based on basic checklists, approved drawings and visual criteria.
- Monitor part movement and update status in tracking formats or route cards.
Technical Documentation:
- Fill out assembly checklists, integration logs, and activity records as per defined formats.
- Contribute to the creation or updating of basic SOPs, route cards, and as-built drawings under guidance.
- Maintain a record of tools and materials issued for each job and ensure return/log-off.
- Capture photographs of key integration stages and tag components appropriately for traceability.
