An operating system, which is designed specifically for smartphones, palmtops, and other handheld/mobile devices is called Mobile Operating System. These operating systems are different from the ones used by other advanced computer systems like laptops ad desktops. The mobile operating system industry is dominated by two major operating systems i.e. Android & iOS.

Android is developed by Google. This mobile operating system is basically derived from Linux Kernel and it is specifically designed to focus on touchscreen mobile devices including tablets, smartphones, and other handheld devices. The user interface provided by Android has a foundation from direct manipulation which utilizes touch gestures that replicate the real-world actions i.e. swiping, tapping and pinching, to manipulate on-screen objects with the help of a virtual keyboard for inputting text. Along with these revolutionary touch devices, Google has also come up with Android for Televisions, Cars, Wrist Watches and so on.

Another robust contender in the mobile operating system war is iOS. iOS or iPhone operating system is created by Apple Inc. and is specifically designed to be used in Apple hardware. This hardware includes the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and so on. A leading mobile operating system in USA, Canada, and UK, iOS is also the leading operating system for tablets. There are multiple reasons behind the success story of Apple iOS. Quality control, maintaining a tight leash over the hardware of the Apple smartphone, along with the operating system and selecting applications for the same before they get launched in the store. Apple successfully established a roster of high quality and well-integrated applications. Apple iOS is targeted at premium customers and developers. Apple stays neutral when it comes to making money from the applications used, which is completely opposite to other operating systems who act as gatekeepers, deciding how apps should be distributed and sold at that point.

Whenever a consumer goes for a smartphone or other handheld devices, he basically considers two of these major stakeholders of mobile operating systems. Let’s have a look at the advantages both the contenders offer.
