But how do you become a content designer, and what does it take to be one?

Could you take us through your journey so far? How long have you been working as a Content designer? And what got you interested in this field?

I have always had a passion for Literature and playing with words. I pursued my Bachelor's degree in Literature from Hindu College, University of Delhi, and recently completed my Master's from Ramjas College.

Throughout my three years of graduation, I engaged in 13 content-related internships, covering areas such as content marketing, research, editing, and writing.

I also actively participate in the Delhi slam poetry group, fueling my love for creative expression. After graduation, I initially ventured into Content Marketing roles at Bajaj Finserv Health and Classplus.

However, it was during my time at Meesho that I experienced a breakthrough moment, transitioning into the world of design and UX.

This shift in perspective was eye-opening, revealing the empathetic and exciting nature of UX design.

Since then, I joined Infoedge as a Content Designer, where I was thrilled to be part of a team of fellow content designers.

It has been almost two years in this field, and I continue to be captivated by the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of content design.

What does a Content Designer do?

Content design is a beautiful blend of research, design, and communication. It aims to thoroughly understand and define a problem, craft the optimal solution, and effectively communicate it through digital interfaces to meet both business and user needs.

As content designers, we take charge of the words, ensuring they resonate with users. Additionally, we conduct user calls and interviews, leveraging research and data to make well-informed decisions.

How do you differentiate between a good design and a bad design?

You know, good design is all about making a product truly useful. When we buy something, we expect it to not only function well but also satisfy our psychological and aesthetic needs.

The key to good design is to highlight the product's usefulness while getting rid of anything that might hinder it.

On the other hand, bad design is a real headache. It's confusing, distracting, hard to use, and doesn't last long.

I've noticed that once I started looking at things from a design perspective, it became so much easier to spot the good designs from the bad ones.

It's like a lightbulb moment when you realize what works and what doesn't.

What motivated you to make the shift from Content Marketing to Content Designing?

Well, I have always had a deep passion for problem-solving and discovering solutions.

Every new project that comes my way feels like a thrilling challenge, an exciting puzzle waiting to be solved. But what caught my attention was the fascinating aspect of user interaction and understanding.

In content designing, we focus on creating a user experience (UX) that revolves around the needs and success of the users themselves.

It's all about building solutions that help users achieve their goals, which ultimately contributes to the overall success of the business. It's a truly human-centered discipline that aligns both user and business objectives.

How different is Content Marketing from Content designing?

So, imagine you're in the world of online marketing. Content marketing is like the cool kid in town. They're all about creating killer content and sharing it online to grab people's attention.

It's like they're saying, "Hey there, check out this awesome stuff we have to offer!"

They focus on writing content that's optimized for search engines and organically attracts visitors. Their goal is to attract users through compelling campaigns rather than guiding them through the actual product experience.

On the other hand, content design takes a different approach. It's like the genius problem solver who understands what people really need.

A content designer works closely with user researchers, digging deep into the minds of website users.

They analyze data and even have chats with real users to figure out what makes them tick. Armed with this valuable insight, content designers craft specific content that directly aligns with user needs.

They collaborate with designers and developers to create a website structure, design patterns, and functionality that make users' lives easier.

It's all about testing, learning, and making constant improvements based on user feedback.

So, while content marketing focuses on attracting users through engaging content, content design takes a more holistic approach, putting the needs and experiences of users at the forefront, and ensuring that the content meets their requirements and helps them accomplish their goals.

Did you develop some special skills/education to transition into your current role?

Becoming a content designer is like developing a superpower for storytelling. It's all about crafting narratives that engage and captivate users, just like how you would share a story with a friend.

To acquire these skills, I started looking at everything through a design thinking lens. It's like putting on a pair of magical glasses that help you see things differently.

I began observing the world around me, paying attention to how information is communicated and presented. It was all about understanding the art of storytelling and how it can be applied in the context of content design.

As a content designer, it's crucial to dive deep into the product or service you're working on. You become the detective, uncovering every nook and cranny of the offering.

This involves learning more about the product, its features, and its benefits. And yes, asking lots and lots of questions! Curiosity becomes your greatest ally as you seek to understand the intricacies of what you're designing for.

Now that you have been a Content designer for some time, what are your key learnings from this field?

As a content designer, some of my key learnings are that I am learning the art of storytelling, weaving narratives that captivate my audience like a magician with a bag of tricks.

It has taught me the secret of putting users at the heart of my designs, empathizing with their needs, and crafting content that speaks directly to them.

But that's not all! I am a part of an epic team of designers, developers, and stakeholders, becoming a better collaborator. My communication skills are leveling up, allowing me to convey your ideas with flair and finesse.

This field has also taught me the importance of data - analyzing numbers and uncovering insights that shape my content strategies.

In a nutshell, my journey as a content designer is a rollercoaster ride filled with creative adventures, user-centered quests, and constant growth.

What are some mandatory skills people pursuing UI/UX Content must develop?

When pursuing a career in content design, there are a few mandatory skills you must develop. These skills will serve as the foundation for your success in the field. Here are some essential ones:

Writing and Communication: You need to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively.

User Research: Learn how to conduct user research, gather insights, and apply them to your content strategy.

Information Architecture: Develop skills in information architecture to create logical content hierarchies, intuitive navigation, and efficient user flows.

Visual Literacy: While not all content designers are visual designers, having visual literacy is important. Learn to appreciate design principles, typography, and layout. This skill allows you to collaborate effectively with visual designers and create visually appealing content experiences.

UX Design Principles: Familiarize yourself with user experience (UX) design principles. Understand the importance of usability, accessibility, and user-centered design.
