2020 was an year of unrest as the world underwent a lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak, leading to a massive transition in people's lives across the world, as we became less social and more conscious.
Social distancing meant everything would have to be done online, which is when we officially entered the age of everything digital.
This digital lifestyle meant a significant rise in the demand for skilled IT professionals, in turn benefiting them by making way for lucrative career opportunities.
But what were these career opportunities? And which IT skills are performing better than others?
We used Skill Trends, a tool by Naukri, to find these answers and gauge the skills IT recruiters in India are looking for and found a few that emerged victorious, even during the pandemic.
So, here is a list of 12 tools that gained maximum traction among recruiters during the pandemic and were able to gain popularity without being affected throughout the year.

1. Kafka
Kafka, or Apache Kafka, is an open-source framework developed by the Apache Software Foundation that allows businesses to effectively manage real-time data.
It is written in the Scala programming language and is extremely useful for data management and real-time analytics in distributed systems.
Low latency, ability to manage substantial numbers, scalability, and data partitioning are just a few of Kafka's characteristics that make it a good fit for data integration, website activity monitoring, stream processing, and operational metrics.
The tool is extremely popular in the IT industry, and recruiters are eager to find candidates specializing in Kafka.
In February 2021, we saw an 83% growth in the number of recruiter searches for Kafka, with 81,612 searches compared to 44,655 in February 2020.
2. Spark
Apache Spark is one of the most widely used data science programming tools.
Spark, which is written in the Scala programming language, assists companies in generating and analyzing large amounts of data to gain insights for day-to-day operations.
Spark is extremely popular with IT developers and engineers as it supports a variety of programming languages, including Java, Scala, R, and Python, making it easy to understand.
Over the previous year, the demand for this skill has grown substantially, with 1,10,074 recruiter searches in February 2021 alone, marking a 53% upward growth in the number of searches by recruiters looking for people who are well-versed with Kafka.
3. RabbitMQ
One of the most widely used open-source message brokers, RabbitMQ is a software responsible for implementing the Advanced Message Queuing Protocol.
It's small and easy to operate both on-premises and in the cloud. It is compatible with a variety of messaging protocols, making it an obvious choice for companies of all segments, from small businesses to big ones.
To meet high-scale, high-availability requirements, RabbitMQ can be deployed in scattered and decentralized configurations.
RabbitMQ is one of the most popular tools in the IT sector and is well-known among recruiters. Recruiter searches for candidates proficient in the tool increased by 55% in February 2021 when compared to February 2020, indicating a significant increase in demand for people specializing in the tool.
4. Terraform
Terraform is an open-source tool that allows you to create, change, and version infrastructure securely and effectively.
Capable of handling both established, well-known service providers as well as custom in-house solutions, Terraform uses configuration files to define the components required to run a single application or an entire datacenter.
The tool has gained popularity due to its simple syntax, which allows for easy modularity and compatibility with multiple clouds. One of the most compelling reasons for using Terraform is to manage their Infrastructure as Code (IAC).

According to recruiter searches on Naukri, demand for people skilled in the tool Terraform has increased by 178%, with a whopping spike in recruiter searches in the domain, increasing to 46,176 in February 2021, from 16,588 in February 2020.
5. Power BI
Microsoft's Power BI is a business analytics service that aims to provide dynamic content and business intelligence capabilities through an easy-to-use interface that allows end-users to generate their reports and dashboards. It's a component of Microsoft's Power Platform.
It is a popular self-service tool that combines data preparation and discovery, interactive dashboards, and rich visualizations into a single solution. Because of its self-service capabilities, the tool can interact with data and turn it into insights.
Because of its ability to make business analytics easy, the tool is one of the most sought-after ones by IT recruiters. This is likely why the demand for Power BI specialists has surged by 88 percent, with recruiter searches jumping from 38,469 in February 2020 to 72,401 in February 2021.
6. Cucumber
Cucumber is a Behavior Driven Development (BDD) tool for creating test cases for software behavior. In automated testing, it serves as a backup. It plays an essential role in the development of acceptance test cases for automation testing.
Primarily used to write acceptance tests for web applications based on their functionalities' behavior, Cucumber observes the behavior of the software's functionalities using a BDD (Behavior Driven Development) framework.
It allows for a fast and simple setup of test cases as well as a very simple execution of test cases or test scenarios and provides an effective testing tool. The test case writing style encourages the reuse of code in tests, making it one of the most popular tools amongst recruiters.

7. Ansible
Ansible is an open-source automation tool for activities like app deployment, provisioning, and configuration management in the IT world.
It aids in the simplification of complex tasks by managing developers' jobs and allowing them to concentrate on adding value, thus improving productivity.
It is free, agentless, simple to set up, effective, and accessible to everyone because no coding skills are required, making it one of the most important tools.
Ansible has gained popularity, and we witnessed a magnificent spike in recruiter searches with 62,713 recruiter searches for Ansible in February 2021, which is 63% more than in February the previous year.
8. Github
GitHub, Inc. is an Internet hosting company that specializes in Git-based software development and version control. It includes Git's distributed version control and source code management features, as well as its own.
GitHub, as the world's largest open-source repository, provides developers with several unrivaled advantages. GitHub has 85 million code repositories and 28 million users.
Github is the largest shared repository, with simple version control and a variety of integrations, supported by the strong community that supports it, leading to its popularity.
In fact, over the previous year, the tool has seen a 61% hike in recruiter searches, going from 14,434 in February 2020 to 23,223 in February 2021.
9. Jmeter
Apache JMeter is open-source software used to analyze and measure the performance and functional behavior of various services, with a focus on web applications.
It is a Java-based application that can perform web application performance tests, load testing, and functional testing.
It is easy to upskill with Jmeter because it does not require extensive programming knowledge, and people with previous knowledge of the Java language can learn how to use the tool.
One of the reasons you should think about learning Jmeter is that Jmeter recruiter searches have jumped by 53% in the last year, with 28,109 searches in February 2021 alone.
10. Talend
Talend is a leader in cloud data integration, that provides a single suite of cloud apps for data integration to assist businesses in collecting, governing, transforming, and sharing data.
Talend is a data integration ETL tool. It offers data preparation, data quality, data integration, application integration, data management, and big data software solutions.
For each of these solutions, Talend has a distinct product. Big data and data integration products are widely used.
Maybe this is why recruiters in India are seeking people with specialization in the tool. According to our report, recruiter searches have increased by 87%, with 18,427 searches in February 2021 alone.
11. Amazon Redshift
Amazon Redshift is a data warehouse service that is part of Amazon Web Services' broader cloud computing platform.
Amazon Redshift makes it simple to add nodes to your data warehouse and ensures that query performance remains fast as your data warehouse expands.
When you need to start querying large quantities of data quickly, have a pricey data warehousing solution, don't want to handle hardware, or need high performance for aggregation queries, Amazon Redshift can help.
Due to the tool's efficiency and popularity in the IT industry, demand for those proficient in Amazon Redshift is rapidly increasing, as evidenced by a massive 112% increase in the number of recruiter searches for the tool in February 2021, compared to just 7,233 in February 2020.
12. Confluence
Confluence is a skill and collaboration workspace for teams, where you can create, collaborate, and organize your work in one place.
Meeting notes, project plans, specifications documents, release notes, roadmaps, and other rich content related to JIRA projects can be created and organized using Confluence pages.
Confluence has grown in popularity due to its popularity among engineers, and it will continue to do so as more recruiters look for the right candidates who know how to use this tool.
Confluence saw a stunning 58% spike in recruiter searches in the previous year, establishing it as one of the important tools for job seekers in the current scenario.
