What is civil engineering? one of the basic questions every aspiring engineering professional should have a detailed knowledge about
Creating, designing & executing to perfection what couldn’t have been even thought of before, has led us to a world of skyscrapers & towering infrastructure.Indeed the secret lies mostly in the science of “Engineering”.
In this blog, we shall give you a detailed overview of civil engineering & its career opportunities.
What is Civil Engineering?
Civil Engineering is broadly defined as a widely structured discipline wherein designing, constructing & maintaining of infrastructure systems is professionally done.
These structures may include public works such as dams, airports, sewage pipes, canals, etc as well as generic construction such as buildings, skyscrapers, houses, etc.
Civil Engineering is usually considered to be the second oldest form of engineering in the world, first being the military engineering.
A professional degree in civil engineering arms an individual with an ability to work in the field of structures as well as be versed to handle financing & business aspect of a company.
Civil engineering nowadays also widely traces its roots well within the public sector from municipalities to government offices, as well as the private sector, ranging from builders to homeowners.
This branch of engineering has emerged as an erupting form of designing science.
What does a Civil Engineer do?
Civil Engineers primary are the think tanks behind designing, planning & executing tasks related to structures & construction. However, in the modern era, field range of this profession has grown in much larger sectors than just construction projects.
Some of the most iconic structures of the world including Burj Khalifa in Dubai, Sydney Opera House, etc have all been constructed under the supervision of remarkable civil engineers.
In modern times, civil engineers are responsible for not only construction planning & execution but also maintaining public infrastructure including roads, rails, bridges, waste networks & much more.
Effective utilization & functioning of vital public resources is an important part of civil engineers work responsibility.
Civil engineers are expected to troubleshoot any complex situation & effectively solve the problem at the earliest in the most cost-effective manner. However, civil engineering has various fields of specialization.
Some of these specializations include environmental, structural, municipal, transport & geotechnical.
Each mentioned specialization has subdivided roles such as consultants & contractors.
Consultants have the most important role to play in the planning phase of a project. They help in finalizing designs, planning & creating a plan of action before the project is started.
Contractors are the ones who are on the construction site. Contractors have a role of keeping a close observation eye on the construction & ensure tasks are completed on time.
Consultants as well as contractors, both have an important role to play in the seamless execution of the project.
However, no matter how challenging the environment may be, creativity, problem-solving ability & teamwork are some key attributes for growth in civil engineering role.
Why build a career in Civil Engineering?
The scope of civil engineering seems endless as far as modern-day professions are concerned. If we take into consideration of market growth trend of civil engineering field, it is estimated to have been USD 9 trillion in 2018 & is expected to show a growth trend of 4% from the period of 2019-2025.
Exponential growth in demand for environmental-friendly buildings along with the involvement of the government to make major metropolitans environment-friendly has provided a launchpad for civil engineering to take a larger market share.
According to Civil Engineering Market Share Statistics Report 2025,Civil Engineering Market Share Statistics Report 2025, the government purchase segment had over 50% of the share in 2018.
This was backed up by well-structured regulations for various construction activities which magnified the market share of civil engineering.
Thus Civil engineering government jobs have also seen substantial growth in India.
Government jobs in civil engineering have started to gain momentum to fill in the demand-supply gap within the government workforce ecosystem.
Big market giants are positively investing in various projects across the length & breadth of the country, thus creating surging scope for more civil engineers.
As per the Economic Times report, By 2020, 95 billion sq. feet is projected to be the demand of construction industry & although the industry is on such a boom, yet this industry lacks the required workforce by a huge margin.
Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors filed a report namely “Real Estate & Construction Professionals in India by 2020” stating that nearly a gap range of 82% to 86% can be seen in Demand-Supply of civil engineers, construction workers & architects.
If this report is further detailed, it states that India shall require 4 million civil engineers by the end of next year.
Keeping into consideration the stats which have evolved, it’s convenient to say that the demand for civil engineers is growing at a much stronger rate.
