The job interview question ‘Do you have any questions?’ is your opportunity to ask questions to your hiring manager. Many a times, candidates say, ‘No, I think I’m good and have understood everything.” There, the chance gets missed and this may show that you’re not engaged with the conversation, or that you’re not interested enough in the role.

Be a candidate who comes across as someone who is genuinely looking forward to knowing more about the company and job profile. This will show your seriousness. So go for it! Start with a polite demur and only ask about particular considerations that are important to you. It may include the kind of work, team culture, day to day schedule, etc.

This article highlights the questions that you can ask your interviewers.

  1. Can I know more about roles and responsibilities for this profile?
  2. What are your expectations for the first 90 days?
  3. Please share more about the company’s culture?
  4. What do you like the most about the company?
  5. Who do you consider your top competitors and why?
  6. Questions you should avoid to ask the interviewer.

Can I know more about roles and responsibilities for this profile?

Paint the big picture. Tell the employer that knowing about the responsibilities will help you accelerate your growth and work in the right direction in case you get selected. Therefore you are interested in knowing more about it. Though you already have the detailed job description before coming for the interview. However, not all the descriptions cover everything and it is a good idea to connect with employer and understand more about the profile you have been interviewed for.

What are your expectations for the first 90 days?

The first 90 days are your stepping stones at any new job. They not only teach you about the work but also about the workplace, your manager’s expectations and your peers. You don’t want to go wrong here. Asking the interviewers about their expectation will get you a direction and pave ways to succeed. This will show your enthusiasm and a sense of commitment.

Please share more about the company’s culture.

A company’s culture reflects about the place’s attitudes, values and attributes. Knowing about it is crucial as you are likely to enjoy your work more if your requirements and values are consistent with your workplace. On the contrary, if you’re working for an employer where you don’t find yourself fitting well, you won’t be able to give your 100% and be less productive.

What do you like the most about the company?

Most candidates are more interested in talking about themselves, whereas this question is good to ask your interviewer and make the interview conversational. It also offers you a sneak peek into whether you’d like to work with this individual or company. Additionally, if the answer excites you, you would get more parameters to evaluate your decision to continue with the company.

Who do you consider your top competitors and why?

Understanding about the company’s competition is very crucial for any candidate, irrespective of the profile and experience level. However, this should be a part of your preliminary research and you should ideally know the answer. So start with what you know and then ask for more details, if required.

  2. Don’t persuade the interviewer to share a defined timeline to get back to you.
  3. Don’t ask about appraisal policy.
  4. Don’t ask about flexible work timings.
  5. Don’t jump to share your references without being asked.

Remember, no one gets a second chance to make the first impression. Therefore, prepare the best for your job interview and make sure you are ready for it! Stay safe. Stay healthy.
