Journey
I joined my college after taking the JEE exam. At first, I was unaware of coding, but after two years, my seniors told me it was the only way to crack big companies. Then, I started practicing coding on different platforms like Code Studio. By the end of my three years in college, I was prepared for interviews.
Application story
This company visited our campus for placement. We only had to apply by submitting our resumes. First, resumes were shortlisted, and later, they conducted the online assessment. Finally, the shortlisted candidates were called for the interview rounds.
Why selected/rejected for the role?
I was selected because I was able to solve problems quickly and efficiently. I was also able to communicate well, which helped me crack the interview.

Given a string ‘STR’ consisting of lower case English letters, the task is to find the first non-repeating character in the string and return it. If it doesn’t exist, return ‘#’.

For example:

For the input string 'abcab', the first non-repeating character is ‘c’. As depicted the character ‘a’ repeats at index 3 and character ‘b’ repeats at index 4. Hence we return the character ‘c’ present at index 2.
Problem approach
  • Create a hash map that maps characters to their frequencies.
  • Traverse the string.
  • Increase the count of the current character.
  • Traverse the string again and check whether the frequency of the current character is 1.
  • Print the first character that has a frequency of 1.
