I have worked on DSA from the very beginning and it helped me a lot because in the beginning or even till the very last rounds for freshers DSA is asked. So I started competitive programming in my 2nd semester and started solving questions then after I gained basic concepts I started giving contests.

I applied through HackwithInfy which comes every year around March-April and that's how I got the opportunity

I got selected because I was good at data structures and algorithms and I was fluent in the tech stack on which I made projects
