Building a Startup in College – Clutchaven Founder Story
College life typically revolves around classes, assignments, and placement preparation. But for some of us, it becomes a platform to explore bold ideas and take risks. That’s exactly how I started my own venture—Clutchaven—alongside two of my close friends.
What began as casual WhatsApp-based selling soon grew into a thriving student-led brand. Here’s how we made it happen.
The Spark of an Idea
One evening, while scrolling through Instagram, I noticed a trend—students love fashion, but not everyone can afford high-end apparel. I casually discussed this with my friend Vijay, who felt the same way. That’s when the idea clicked: Why not launch something simple, trendy, and budget-friendly for students like us?
Without overthinking, we named our brand Clutchaven and got to work.
The WhatsApp Phase
We had no investment or grand vision—just motivation. We began by connecting with local suppliers, curating a basic catalog of t-shirts and jeans, and marketing it through WhatsApp groups in college.
Our first few orders came from classmates, which felt like huge wins. We handled online payments, packed the clothes ourselves, and even delivered some orders personally.
Key strategies we used:
- Direct promotion via WhatsApp groups
- Limited but trendy collections
- Collecting and acting on real-time feedback
Growing Step-by-Step
Soon, our visibility increased. We launched an Instagram page and began posting reels, offers, and customer reviews. As orders from outside our college started rolling in, our third friend Vinay joined us to manage backend operations and customer conversations.
After months of consistent work, we opened a small store. Seeing the name Clutchaven on the shop board was an emotional and defining moment—we had built something real.
Facing Challenges and Learning
Our growth wasn’t without hurdles. Customers would often delay responses or cancel orders at the last minute. Inventory issues and supplier delays were frustrating. And balancing this side hustle with college academics was exhausting.
Key lessons we learned:
- Maintain buffer stock to handle demand
- Be clear and polite with customers
- Divide responsibilities to avoid burnout
First Big Breakthrough
A turning point came when we received a bulk order of 100+ custom T-shirts for a college fest. It was our first big client. We worked late nights, managed approvals, and delivered on time. This order gave us the confidence to take Clutchaven to the next level.
Dividing Roles as a Team
From day one, we divided tasks based on strengths. I focused on marketing and content, Vijay handled vendor and supplier communication, and Vinay managed logistics and customer service.
Weekly meetings helped us track performance, brainstorm new offers, and plan upcoming designs. It felt like running a startup while juggling classes and exams.
Listening to Feedback
Feedback was a pillar of our growth. Whether it was sizing issues or delivery concerns, we paid close attention. To enhance customer experience, we even included handwritten thank-you notes in packages. These small gestures strengthened customer loyalty and improved word-of-mouth marketing.
Why Student Entrepreneurship Matters
Starting Clutchaven taught me more than any textbook. Student entrepreneurship builds real-world skills like communication, time management, and customer handling. Even if a business doesn’t scale up, the personal growth and learning are invaluable.
Support from College and Friends
Our early success was also due to the support we received. Friends helped us with shares, feedback, and even product shoots. A few professors appreciated our initiative and offered encouragement. That support meant the world to us in our early stages.
Future Goals for Clutchaven
We’re currently focused on expanding our reach. Our next steps include launching a dedicated website and offering custom-printed apparel. Long-term, I envision Clutchaven as a brand that embodies student fashion—bold, budget-friendly, and youth-driven.
I also hope to mentor other student entrepreneurs, helping them turn ideas into action.
What I Learned from Building Clutchaven
This journey proved that you don’t need lots of money or experience to start something meaningful. With a clear idea and a supportive team, you can build something powerful. We gained more than profits—we gained confidence, communication skills, and entrepreneurial experience.
A Message to Fellow Students
If you have an idea, don’t wait for the “right time.” Start with what you have. We used WhatsApp, a small network, and a lot of effort. If we could do it, so can you. College is the best time to take risks and build something new.
Clutchaven started as a fun experiment and became a proud achievement. Today, I dream of becoming a successful entrepreneur and inspiring more students to pursue their ideas. If this story motivates even one person to begin, it will be a win for me.
