Front-end development is a high-in-demand career option today. With several tier-1 and tier-2 companies looking for Front-end developers, it has emerged as one of the most popular career options in India.

Front-end developers are responsible for conceptualizing and designing websites and applications to make user interaction seamless. Sounds interesting, right?

If you are looking to explore the field, here is something for you! In this article, we are in conversation with Sweta Arya, Team Lead-Technology at Naukri, who shares all about front-end development and her career journey as a front-end developer.

Let’s dive in!

1. Could you please walk us through your journey?

My career began in 2014. More than 8 years have passed since then. I was a software engineer in the beginning.

Since front-end programming has always piqued my attention, I have always known what I wanted to pursue.

So, I immediately started working as a Front-end developer. Since then, more than 8 years have passed.

I have worked for three different firms, on numerous projects using a variety of technologies, and I have never had a day at work that was boring.

2. How long have you been working in front-end development?

I began in 2014 after being hired by a company immediately after graduating. I have always been interested in front-end development work. So, I started working there as a front-end developer.

Front-end development has continued to astound me ever since. While working, I still have the same passion as I did then.

3. What got you interested in this field?

Actually, there are a few things that caught my attention:

  1. This field is always evolving. As a result, you never grow bored and you always learn new things. There is also no end to knowledge.

  2. Also, you can see your work displayed on the website. What we do, we create, is actually what is seen by users.

  3. Backend development was a big no for me because I have never been a fan of databases. I apologize if I sound a little divisive. However I have a ton of respect for backend developers.

4. How did you land your first job?

I got my first job through campus placements, and I joined soon after completing my graduation.

5. What has helped you more — your education or your experience?

Both, in my opinion, have been significant in my life. Because of my education, I am here. But I can't deny that my professional and personal lives have both benefited from my work experience.

A person's personal development is also aided by professional scenarios, how you handle them, how you interact with the people and learning about their experiences.

Because of my experience, I believe I have grown wiser, more self-assured, and more centered.

6. What would you advise our readers planning to pursue a profession in front-end development?

A lot of people have this misconception that front-end development is all about changing colors and buttons. No, it’s a lot more than just HTML and CSS.

We also deal with intriguing problems which we tackle with complex data structures and algorithms. Plus, there are always new frameworks/technologies to learn about. I have never had a single dull day as a front-end developer.

7. How do you deal with stressful situations at work?

I have had a fair share of stressful situations at work during my career. When I'm stressed out about something at work, I attempt to think of the best course of action.

If I can't solve the problem, I talk to my seniors and coworkers about it and ask for their assistance. I usually ask them, what would they do if they were at my place. And, then I somehow manage to figure it out.

8. How has Front-end development changed since the time you started?

Well, it has changed a lot. I started with vanilla JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. And, now we have multiple frameworks to work on – React, Angular, Vue.JS and so many more.

Then, there’s a typescript. SEO has become so crucial for front-end development. As I mentioned earlier, it’s an ever-evolving field.

9. How has Info Edge helped in your career growth?

So, in March 2018, I started working at Info Edge as a Senior Software Engineer.

I've been with Info Edge for about five years, and it's been a wonderful experience. I've worked on numerous projects and in various verticals over the past five years.

I began with Naukri Fast Forward, went on to Naukri PWA, and am currently a Team Lead for the Naukri Jobseeker team. I've had the opportunity to work with a lot of smart individuals, learn a lot from others, and mentor others.

So far, the experience has been fantastic. I've grown significantly both professionally and personally thanks to Info Edge.
