Online job interview tips in the wake of Covid-19
Unlike the past months, hiring is now picking up the pace! Many companies are gearing up to hire talent to fill in critical as well as regular roles. With the ongoing social distancing becoming a new norm, candidates are being interviewed online.
The very mention of virtual interview can make anyone nervous especially if it is a new experience. However, a little preparation can go a long way. Many students reach out to us to understand how they should prepare for online interviews. This article highlights the tips and methods that will help you to increase the likelihood of your success!
Let’s read further:
Check your technology: Since it is an online interview, you should be sure about your internet connectivity and continuity. Any last minute hiccups can be disastrous. Hence, you should have a working connection available all the time.
Ensure audio video quality: Understand the dos and don’ts of the video conferencing platform that you will be using for the online interview. Be it Skype, Zoom, MS Teams, or WeChat, you should have a prior knowledge of using it well.
Pick a good spot: Distractions can lead to troubles. Choose a place which is peaceful, well-lit and neat so that the interviewer can focus more on you and not what is around you. Keep the system or the laptop at your eye level and do not keep moving it during your online job interview. This can distract the interviewer. In case you are staying on a sharing basis, you may want to let the interviewer know about this earlier and keep a time that is comfortable for all. However, don’t keep changing the interview spots.
Dress well: Though the interviewer knows that you are at home, you should still dress professionally. Style can create a huge impact. Dress formally. It helps.
Prepare with mock interviews: An advance interview practice can cut your anxiety and help you be confident. It will also make you comfortable with the use of technology in case you are using any video sharing platform for the first time. You may ask for help from friends and family, conduct mock interviews.
Another tip to practice for an online interview is to stand before the mirror and ask yourself the questions as if you are an interviewer and then answer them as well. You will immediately figure out if any answer is sounding stroppy and refine them accordingly. The more you practice, the more confident you’ll be during the real virtual interview.
Don’t use fancy alias and IDs: In a virtual world, your email ID is your identity. It should help you come across as a professional and serious job seeker. Use of fancy alias can put your professionalism in question. Remember, you are not in a high school anymore! We recommend you to make an email ID using a combination of your first name and last name. In case, such an id is not available, you may go for an industry keyword.
Keep a professional body language: Body language is a non-verbal way of communication and plays a significant role in almost all aspects of business and professional life. Your movements and gestures convey your thoughts. Have a proper body language during an interview; be it online or offline. Sit up straight, smile and make eye contact.
Finally yet importantly, be fully prepared: Do your homework, including knowing about the company, its products and services, competitors, vision and a little bit about the interviewer’s bio. Understand the role that you have applied for and go through the job description thoroughly. Keep the questions that you would like to ask the interviewer prepared in advance.
We recommend you to prepare commonly-asked interview questions, review the job description and give relevant examples from your internship projects. Briefly tell about your work experience (if any) and achievements. You may think about practicing the following questions:
- Tell me something about yourself
- Where do you see yourself five year from now?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Why do you want this job?
- Why should we hire you?
These are some quick online job interview tips to help you be successful. Make the most of them and keep upskilling yourself. Addition of new skills in your CV will definitely help you stand apart from the crowd and emerge as a winner.
Stay safe, stay healthy.
