Resume Tips to Land Work From Home Jobs

The novel coronavirus pandemic is causing layoffs and long vacations of millions of jobseekers across the globe. Simultaneously, qualified freshers and dedicated professionals are on the hunt for new jobs. While industries offering essential services are hiring rampantly, you may want to stick with a work-from-home job until normalcy gets restored.

The concept of a work from home job is not new at all and has been around for quite some time now. Given the fact that millennials like to work on the go, these remote job profiles have received a favorable response, especially from freshers. Also, the ability to work remotely or from home is a treasured skill in itself!

The benefits of working from home while you are sitting at home can be amazing. As a fresher, you should start applying to such jobs out there, especially given the current scenario caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. A work from home job will not only keep you safe indoors, but also ensure that you turn out to be a more focused and effective employee for your future workplace. In order to land a WFH job, all you need is a perfect fresher resume that will catch the recruiter’s eye and also pass the scrutiny posed by an ATS or an applicant tracking system.

How do we ensure that?

In this article, we have collated some super effective, useful and actionable tips for you to follow while you build your resume for a work from home job as a fresher.

Include only relevant information

Put up only the most important information. Your extensive internship details, educational experience, and project works will play no part unless they are relevant for a remote job. Keep your resume brief, to the point, and please do not leave out key information. The ATS might scan keywords in your resume diligently but a hiring manager will spend only 6 seconds on your resume.

What not to include? ensure that your resume has no old or irrelevant information like minor degrees, position earned at a school debate competition etc. These will only distract the recruiter from key information.

What to include? Include only work experience, achievements, education and skills most relevant to the employer. These will be available within the job posting itself. Prioritize the same and draw attention to your key skills and achievements that are relevant for a work from home job.

Clarify that you are location independent

You have made up your mind to apply for a remote position. This job has no specific location requirements. So please note that your physical address is not important! It is better in such a case to leave your physical address off, or simply state “remote” or “location independent” in the designated space.

Show your skills for working remotely

Highlight your desire to work remotely. In your professional summary, set your intent as a job applicant by mentioning your desire and ability to work remotely. In case you have successfully held remote positions in the past in an internship or project or freelance assignment, its time to call those out! Also, in the work experience section list “remote” as the place of your company’s location.

In order to pass the ATS or applicant tracking system, some skill-based keywords should be added to your resume. These words can help you crack a work from home job:

  • Time management
  • Collaboration
  • Strong work ethics
  • Adaptability
  • Digital communication
  • Organized
  • Self-starter
  • Proactive
  • Flexible
  • Tech-savvy
  • Independent problem solver
  • Reliable

Make your resume readable

You might pass the ATS or applicant tracking system by stuffing your resume with work from home skills and keywords. But when it comes to a hiring manager’s human eye, you need to pass the 6 second resume test.  HR managers skim through hundreds of resumes daily, and if you want yours to catch their attention, make it readable. A clean and attractive format is what you need.
