Members of the AWS Outposts Family
Now we will learn about various AWS outposts family.
AWS Outposts storage
The AWS Outposts rack has a 42U form factor, which is industry standard. AWS infrastructure, services, APIs, and tools are available to virtually any data center or co-location space. For a truly consistent hybrid experience, Outposts rack provides AWS compute, database, storage, and other services locally while still allowing access to the full range of AWS services available in the Region. The scale adds and storage capacity pools from a single 42U rack to multiple rack deployments of up to 96 racks.
AWS Outposts servers
AWS Outposts servers are available in 1U or 2U configurations. They offer the same AWS infrastructure, services, APIs, and tools to on-premises and edge locations with limited space or capacity requirements, such as retail stores, branch offices, healthcare provider locations, or factory floors. Outpost servers provide compute and networking services on a local level.
AWS outpost rack
AWS Outposts rack is a complete managed service that provides the same AWS services, AWS infrastructure, APIs, and tools to virtually any on-premises co-location or data center space for a truly consistent hybrid experience. The AWS Outposts rack is ideal for workloads requiring low latency access to on-premises systems, residency, local data processing, and application migration with regional system dependencies. You can use familiar AWS services and tools to build, manage, and scale your on-premises applications using the full range of AWS services available in AWS Regions.
Features
The AWS Outposts rack provides fully managed AWS infrastructure, native AWS services, APIs, and tools to virtually any customer in an on-premises facility. AWS Outposts rack enables on-premises applications that require low latency, local data processing, or local data storage while removing the undifferentiated heavy lifting required to procure, manage, and upgrade on-premises infrastructure.
Compute and Storage
Compute
The Compute AWS Outposts rack catalog includes options for the most recent generation Intel-powered EC2 instance types, with or without local instance storage. General-purpose (M5/M5d) provides a balance of memory, compute, and network resources and can be used for general-purpose workloads, backend servers, web and application servers, enterprise applications, gaming servers, and caching fleets.
Storage
Amazon EBS: The AWS Outposts rack provides local instance storage and Elastic Block Store (EBS) gp2 volumes for persistent block storage. You can use EBS gp2 volumes for boot or data volumes and attach or detach EBS volumes to EC2 instances on your Outpost in the same way you can in AWS Regions. It offers snapshot and restores capabilities and the ability to increase volume size without affecting performance. All EBS volumes and snapshots on the Outposts rack are fully encrypted by default. EBS is available in three tiers: 11 TB, 33 TB, and 55 TB*.
VPC network extension
You can extend your Amazon VPC to your on-premises Outpost. Following installation, you can create a subnet in your regional VPC and associate it with an Outpost in the same way you would associate subnets with an Availability Zone in an AWS Region. Instances in Outpost subnets use private IP addresses to communicate with other instances in the AWS Region, all within the same VPC.
Local access point
Each Outpost comes with a new local gateway (LGW) that connects your Outpost resources to your on-premises networks. The LGW protocol enables low-latency connectivity between the Outpost and any local data sources, end-users, machinery, equipment, or databases.
Private Internet Access
You can use AWS Outposts Private Connectivity to create a service link VPN connection from your Outpost to an AWS Region via AWS Direct Connect. Private connectivity reduces exposure to the public internet and eliminates the need for specialized firewall configurations.
Use cases
Low-latency computation
Interactive applications, such as real-time, multi-player games, require low latency to provide a high-quality gaming experience regardless of where players are located around the world. Whenever the nearest AWS Region is not close to meeting application latency requirements, the Outposts rack can assist you in running applications where they need to be.
Processing of local data
Due to size, cost, bandwidth, or timing constraints, some local datasets cannot be easily migrated to AWS Regions for processing. Outposts rack enables you to process data locally while keeping your data lakes and machine learning training in an AWS Region.
Residency of data
For regulatory, contractual, or information security reasons, data may need to remain in a specific country, state, or municipality, as is frequently the case in financial services, healthcare, oil and gas, and other highly regulated industries. You can control where your data resides and where workloads run with the Outposts rack. It also enables low-friction workload movement between your on-premises environment and the AWS Region and vice versa, with minimal application changes.
Modernization and migration
Some workloads can be difficult to migrate to the cloud and modernize your stack – often, there is a long legacy, on-premises applications that are difficult to move from on-premises to AWS Regions. This is because of the latency-sensitive system interdependencies between the various components of the application. As dependencies emerge, segmenting these migrations into smaller pieces necessitates latency-sensitive connectivity between different application parts. Outposts rack facilitates and accelerates migration by allowing you to modernize application latency-sensitive dependencies on-premises. Then you can easily migrate the application to the cloud when ready.
The Advantages of AWS Outposts
The following are some of the potential advantages of using AWS Outposts:
Parameters of security
AWS Outposts is a world-class solution when it comes to ensuring business security. The business data is so sensitive and confidential that transferring it to the cloud could be dangerous. AWS Outposts enable businesses to keep confidential data within their premises while maintaining complete security control over the data. Due to stringent security measures and policies, AWS Outposts is one of the best ways to keep your data safe.
Locally run virtual servers
We can run Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) on local infrastructure using Outposts. It allows us to run virtual servers on-premises as if in the cloud. As a result, we can scale up and scale down servers as needed and run amazon elastic block stores.
Value for money
You can use AWS Outpost to deploy the most recent AWS tools on local infrastructure. For many businesses, the costs of using AWS Outposts are lower than the costs of maintaining legacy on-premises systems.
Upgradation
AWS Outpost will receive next-generation technology upgrades more likely than traditional on-premises servers. AWS even allows for automatic updates to ensure secure and efficient operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it possible to use my existing servers in an Outpost?
No, the AWS Outposts rack is built on AWS infrastructure. It is only supported on AWS-designed hardware that is optimized for secure, high-performance, and reliable operations.
Where do EBS snapshots reside?
EBS snapshots of EBS Volumes on Outposts racks are stored on Amazon S3 in the Region by default. If your Outpost is configured with Amazon S3 on Outposts, you can store your snapshots locally on your Outpost. Because EBS snapshots are incremental, only the blocks on your Outpost that have changed since your most recent snapshot are saved. You can restore (hydrate) EBS Volume on Outposts at any time using the stored snapshots. Visit the EBS Snapshots documentation to learn more.
How does AWS keep the AWS Outposts rack infrastructure running?
AWS will monitor your Outpost as part of the public Region and automatically execute software upgrades and patches once installed and visible in the AWS Management Console.
If physical maintenance is required, AWS will contact you to schedule a visit to your site. AWS may replace a given module as needed but will not serve any host or network switch on the customer's premises.
What actions are possible with the AWS outpost?
AWS Outposts allow you to run some AWS services locally while also connecting to a wide range of local services. Use familiar AWS services, tools, and APIs to run applications and workloads on-premises.
