Introduction

This article will explore the advantages and disadvantages of the biometric system.

Before we see the advantages and disadvantages of biometrics, it is important to understand the meaning of Biometrics.

Biometrics

Biometrics is the identification of an individual using physical characteristics.

The examples of biometrics are:

  • Fingerprint
  • Face scan
  • Retina Scan
  • Heart rate sensors
  • Voice recognition

Advantages of biometric system

The advantages of biometrics are:

  • Faster Authentication
  • Convenient
  • Accuracy
  • Flexibility
  • Scalability
  • Access Control
  • Can’t be easily stolen

Faster Authentication

Using biometrics, we can unlock an application quickly. It becomes very quick to authenticate an individual using a fingerprint or face scan.

Convenient

In Biometric technology, we can store the attendance data of the employees in sheets or databases. We can search and update the data in the sheets easily. We can easily search the leaves of the employees.

Accuracy

The data obtained from biometric security is quite accurate. The data will show the exact time the employee entered or left the office.

Flexible

The company doesn't have to maintain long paper attendance sheets to store the data. Also, we don't have to enter the password again and again to unlock a device or application.

Scalability

We can use the biometric features for multiple projects and purposes.

Access Control

The biometric gives access control to the manager. He can add and remove access to the employees easily.

Can’t be easily stolen

The biometric fingerprint and face lock can’t be stolen by observing him.

Disadvantages of biometric system

The disadvantages of the biometric system are:

  • False positives
  • Scanner compatibility
  • Expensive
  • Malfunction
  • Privacy issues

False positives

Stolen biometrics can be used to create false positives. False-positive in the biometric means the system incorrectly accepts the user as a match. False positives occur due to stolen data used for authentication or due to very similar faces.

Scanner Compatibility

There may be issues with the scanner registering retina lock on the device due to long eyelashes or different eyelashes.

Expensive

A safe and reliable biometric system can become expensive. The manufacturer has to keep the possibilities of safety to the users, reliability and durability of the biometrics.

Malfunction

The biometric software may fail due to a bug in the system. The power shortage may lead to failing the biometric system.

Privacy issues

The employer can misuse the fingerprint data of the employees. Thus the privacy of an employee or a person can be compromised.
