Introduction

In Django, creating forms is very similar to creating a model. All of the work done by Django forms can be done with advanced HTML, but Django makes it easier and more efficient, especially when it comes to validation. Once you've mastered Django forms, you'll never go back to HTML forms.

In this article, we will learn about Django form in detail. So, without any further ado, let's get started!

Django Forms

We can create Django forms from scratch or save the form's results to the model using a ModelForm. Defining the form's fields is essential for creating a Form class. Validation rules and a few other hooks are specific to each field. Forms are primarily used to collect data from users in some form, then used to perform logical operations on databases. Django creates HTML input fields from Django form fields.

Syntax :

field_name = forms.FieldType(**options)

Django Fields function similarly to Django Model Fields.

Creating a Django Form

In Django, creating a form is very similar to creating a model. It is necessary to specify which fields will be present in the form and what type of fields will be present. For example, to enter a student's information, you might need Name (CharField), Class (IntegerField), etc.

 Syntax:

from django import forms

        class Form_name(models.Model):

        fieldName = models.Field(**options)

For creating a form in Django, we can use the code given below:

from django import forms

# creating a form
class InputForm(forms.Form):

   firstName = forms.CharField(max_length = 100)
   lastName = forms.CharField(max_length = 100)
   rollNumber = forms.IntegerField(
                   roll = "Enter your roll number"
                   )
   password = forms.CharField(widget = forms.PasswordInput())

Render Django Forms

Although Django form fields have several built-in methods to help developers, customizing the User Interface sometimes necessitates manual implementation.

Django form fields can be rendered using one of three built-in methods in a form.

Methods Description
{{ form.as_ul }} It will render them as wrapped in <li> tags.
{{ form.as_table }} It will render them wrapped in <tr> tags as table cells.
{{ form.as_p }} It will render them wrapped in <p> tags.

We have to move to views.py and create a home view as shown below to render this form into a view.

from django.shortcuts import render
from .forms import InputForm

# Create views here.
def home_view(request):
   context ={}
   context['form']= InputForm()
   return render(request, "home.html", context)

In view, one needs just to create an instance of the form class created above in forms.py.

 <form action = "" method = "post">
   {% csrf_token %}
   {{form }}
   <input type="submit" value=Submit">
</form>

Creating Django Form from Models

Django ModelForm is a class that converts a model directly into a Django form. We'll certainly have forms corresponding to Django models if we're making a database-driven app. We can create a model in codingninjas/models.py once we have our project ready.

from django.db import models

# declaring model with a name "CodingNinjasModel"
class CodingNinjasModel(models.Model):

   title = models.CharField(max_length = 100)
   description = models.TextField()
   lastUpdate = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add = True)
   image = models.ImageField(upload_to = "images/")

   def __str__(self):
       return self.title

Run Code

Enter the following code to create a form for model directly:

from django import forms

# import CodingNinjasModel from models.py
from .models import CodingNinjasModel

# creating ModelForm
class NinjasForm(forms.ModelForm):

   class Meta:
       model = CodingNinjasModel
       fields = "__all__"

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What do you mean by Django?
    Django is a Python-based web application framework that is free and open source. A web framework is a collection of components that make it easier and faster to create websites.

  2. What do you mean by Django form?
    Form is a Django class that is used to create HTML forms. It describes a form's functionality and appearance. 3. What are the different types of Django forms?
    The HTML markup and server-side validation facilities of Django form fields define two types of functionality.
