Defect Management is an important part of Software Development lifecycle. The Defect Management Life Cycle in HP ALM has been divided into many stages. They are:

Status

Description

New This is the initial status assigned to a defect when it is first reported.
Open Once developers have reviewed the review, it is moved to the open status.
Rejected When the developers find the defect invalid, it is moved to the rejected status.
Fixed When the defect is resolved, it is marked as fixed.
Reopen If the testing team finds the same defect again, it is moved to the Reopen status.
Closed Once the testing team passes the defect, it is marked as closed.

Creating a new defect in HP ALM

A defect is a fault or unexpected occurrence in the system that is to be fixed to deliver a quality product. 

The steps for creating a new defect in Defect Management Life Cycle in HP ALM are as follows:

  • Open the Quality Center and search for defects. Click on the “New Defect” Button.
  • In the new defect dialogue, add the details:
    • Select who detected the defect.
    • Mention the impact of the defect.
    • Give the details of the defect.
  • You can also add attachments. To do so, go to the “Attachment” tab and click on “Attachments.” Select the document you want to attach and click open to add the attachment.
  • Click on the “Submit” button to submit the defect. A defect ID will be generated.
  • The defect has now been reported. You can review it by clicking on the defects tab.

Linking a defect to a test case in HP ALM

The defects often have to be linked to each other in the Defect Management Life Cycle in HP ALM to establish references between them. This allows us to keep track of the history of related defects. For example, if a defect that has been created was created previously, it can be linked to refer to the previous one. 

To Link a defect in HP ALM, you can follow the steps given below:

  • Right-click on the defect you want to link and select “Defect Details.”
  • In the defect details window, click on the “Linked Entities” tab to make sure that the defect tab is selected.
  • Review the linked defects once they are connected.

In case you want to link a specific defect, the steps given below are to be followed:

  • While linking, click “others” to select the requirement.
  • Generate a traceability matrix once the requirement is linked to the existing defect. To do so, you can go to the view option in the requirements section and select the “Traceability Matrix.”

Uploading defect using Excel in HP ALM

To create defects manually, the testing team has to upload the defects using Excel. 

The steps to upload a defect using Excel in Defect Management Life Cycle in HP ALM are:

  • Create an Excel file with the required defect data. Add the attachments.
  • Open HP ALM and go to the ‘Add-Ins’ tab.
  • Select ‘Export to HP ALM.’
  • Enter the URL of the HP ALM server and click open.
  • Enter the username and password. Click ‘Next.’
  • Select the domain and project where the defects are to be uploaded. Click ‘Next.’
  • Select Defects as the type of data to be imported.
  • Since this is your first time, choose to create a new map instead of using a previous one. Click ‘Next.’
  • In the mapping dialogue, match the fields in the Excel file with the corresponding fields in HP ALM. by clicking on each field and selecting the appropriate option from the dropdown list. Repeat it for all the fields and click on the next arrow button.
  • After a successful upload, a finish button appears on the screen showing the defects have been uploaded.

Searching for a defect in HP ALM

Once a defect is logged into HP ALM, they are stored in the system. As the number of defects increases, keeping track of them becomes difficult. To address this issue,, we have the Defect Management Life Cycle search feature in HP ALM. 

The steps to search for a defect in Defect Management Life Cycle in HP ALM are as follows:

  • Click on the “Edit” menu.
  • Select the “Find” option.
  • Enter the details related to the defect you want to search for.
  • Click on the ‘Next’ button.
  • The details of the defects searched are displayed on the screen.

Receiving email updates and alerts in HP ALM

HP ALM provides a feature by which the assigned user gets notified whenever there is a change made in the defect. The user gets updated through emails.

To receive email updates, you can follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Go to the ‘Alerts’ tab in HP ALM.
  • Find the section for setting up email notifications.
  • Enter the email address of the person who should receive the notifications.
  • Provide other required details.
  • An email will be sent if any changes are made to the defect. This email might contain details like the person's name, who is to be notified, and the result of the last status change activity.
